BEYOND THE MILES
WHY health equity MATTERS
In Detroit, health outcomes aren’t just numbers—they’re symptoms of systemic neglect.
Nearly 1 in 5 adults lives with type 2 diabetes.
46.2% battle high blood pressure, a condition that fuels strokes, heart attacks, and kidney failure.
Heart disease kills Detroiters at a rate nearly 60% higher than the national average.
Chronic kidney disease claims lives at 1.5× the statewide rate.
These are preventable outcomes. And we refuse to treat them like inevitabilities.
Change begins with health equity, creating consistent access to health for people who have historically been excluded.
We focus on proactive health—creating access to movement, education, support, and accountability before intervention becomes necessary. We believe health should be introduced as a practice, not a prescription. A habit, not a reaction.
By making wellness accessible, from the streets to the mat, we create entry points for individuals to move with confidence, build trust in their bodies, and develop routines that support long-term well-being.
Sustained by responsibility, not recognition. Healthier cities are built through access, consistency, and opportunity—led by neighbors committed to community leadership.
shaped by consistency
From the start, City Sweat Club showed up. For over a year, we met every Wednesday at 6 PM at Nike Detroit—to run, to walk, and to move together. We showed up through rainy days, bitter cold, and snowy winds, believing that consistency mattered more than conditions.
Those miles were never just about running. They became a place to connect, to listen, to support one another, and to share what we were carrying—physically, mentally, and emotionally.
The Club never needed four walls to exist. Before there was a space, there was connection. We built the environment by showing up, moving together, and caring for one another. The goal, however, was always to create a place to belong—a brick-and-mortar we could cohabitate in, move through, and call our own.
Now, we have a home—built by the very hands that helped lay its foundation long before the doors ever opened.
built by community
Shortly after celebrating one year of impact, City Sweat Club stepped into a space to call home.
Powered by funds generated through classes, memberships, and contribution gifts from our community, we officially moved in by September and began shaping this clubhouse with intention. Every detail—painted walls, built elements, shared resources—was created by the hands of our people, members and friends that have found value serving the city alongside us, that have consciously decided to now serve the club.
Built together, to be a place where people can gather, connect, and feel something real. That’s the energy we intend for all to experience each time they enter the club.
